We have 10 ducks on the farm who were all hatched here on the farm as ducklings last year. They just started laying eggs early this spring (winter really) and so we hope to have a new batch of ducklings soon.

Life at the Duck Pond… er, Kiddie Pool!

At Our Latest Hobby Farm, our ducks enjoy the simple pleasures of life in their very own kiddie pool paradise! While they may not have a traditional pond, our feathered friends make the most of their watery retreat, splashing, paddling, and quacking to their hearts’ content, whether it’s the middle of summer, or the middle of winter.

Egg-citing Facts

Despite their unconventional swimming hole, our ducks started laying eggs this winter. So far we’re only getting a couple a day, but we hope that will increase a bit as the weather warms up. Duck eggs taste very similar to chicken eggs (you may not even be able to tell the difference), but they have a higher fat content which makes them great for making homemade mayo from.

While they’re a bit standoffish, they aren’t aggressive, and sometimes you can get them to eat out of your hand if you’re patient.

Care

The ducks have a fenced-in enclosure to keep them safe from predators while we wait for the dogs to grow up and can hopefully keep them safe while free-roaming one day. At night they sleep in a coop we built from recycled pallets that can hold about 30 ducks and geese, in case our egg hatching goes well this spring.
